The car park on the B6160 about 1 mile past Kilnsey heading towards Kettlewell (carpark signposted on the day)


THE ROUTE:

PART 1: 21 MILE & 12 MILE WALKERS

From start go right on the B6160. At junction, turn left into Kilnsey. PLEASE BE CAREFUL ON THE ROADS – walk in single file facing oncoming traffic & exercise great caution when crossing roads.

In Kilnsey take the small road alongside theTennant Arms & go up the hill past houses to Mastiles Lane. Mastiles Lane will take you to Checkpoint 1 - Street Gate. Go left at the bridle way signposted to Malham 5½ miles. Where path forks follow the signpost to Malham Tarn. Go through gate with wall on either side of the lane. Go through another gate at a signpost for Street Gate 2 ½ miles. Go through another gate signposted for Street Gate 2 miles & another 2 gates after this. Ignore sign to Middlehouses 1½ miles, continue with wall on left. Go through new wooden gate, over bridge at Malham Tarn Estate & follow path to
Checkpoint 1 – Street Gate (SD 905 656).


PART 2: 21 MILE WALKERS ONLY.
FROM STREET GATE TO ARNCLIFFE VIA FOUNTAINS FELL & LITTON

From Street Gate follow the road towards the Tarn for 150 yards, at the signpost go right. Follow the path through the gate around the Tarn, keeping the tarn on your left. From Malham Tarn Field Centre follow the lane that cuts through the limestone. Keep your eyes peeled for a Pennine Way (PW) sign on the right, go through a wooden gate into a field. Follow the PW & over a stile. Follow a well-marked track to cross the road at Tennant Gill. From the road, take track to Tennant Gill – don’t enter farmyard. Go round the wall on the left, up the field, following the PW. Crossing the stile at the top, bear left for about 100 yards where you meet the remains of an old wall. Go right here following the PW sign, by a cairn (stone pyramid) & follow cairns up hill, they gradually bear right & run level for a while. Follow the PW signs. PLEASE NOTE: TAKE CARE IN THIS AREA – THERE ARE UNFENCED SHAFTS. KEEP TO THE PATH!!

From the top of Fountains Fell follow PW down hill on the well-defined path to Blishmire Close. When the path meets the road you are at
Blishmire Close – Checkpoint 2 (SD 852 724).
Here, take the road right, towards Halton Gill. At the “no through road” & “Bridleway to Litton” signs go right. Dropping down the hillside meet another track by a bridge. Do not cross the bridge but take the walled path right past sign, “No horses, cyclists or vehicles – farm vehicles access only”. Follow footpath to Litton, through a wooden gate in a wall & a gate at the right hand corner of field, go past cowsheds following public footpath through wall into next field. Follow yellow way markers to a wooden footbridge. Do not cross this!
This is Checkpoint 3 – Litton (SD 904 741).


From Checkpoint 3 - The stiles cross the fields heading towards Litton. Follow footpath signs through fields to an old metal gate & wooden bridge over a stream – there is a footpath sign to Arncliffe 2 ¼ miles. Follow all footpath signs until you get to the river. Follow path to left through a new wooden gate. Here is an English Nature, information panel; you are at Scoska Wood. Join the path into Arncliffe.
Checkpoint 4 IN is on the Green at Arncliffe.
The OUT checkpoint & comfort stop is at Amerdale Hall.
To get there, walk 200 yards down the road towards Kilnsey. At the main road, turn left, go down towards the church – Amerdale Hall is on the left. Please take care on the road outside the Hall, as it’s on a bend. PLEASE NOTE: NO WALKING BOOTS IN THE MAIN HALL. Remember you MUST CHECK OUT here too.


PART 2: 12 MILE WALKERS ONLY
- FROM STREET GATE TO ARNCLIFFE VIA MIDDLEHOUSES

From the checkpoint take the by way to Arncliffe parish boundary (at the ‘No Cars’ sign). Walk along the bridleway & just before the farm on the left, you will come across a stile in a barbed wire fence & a signpost to Arncliffe 3 ½ miles. Cross the stile & go up hill on the bridle way to a wall stile. Across the stile take path leading from the gateway. At the fork take a right, meet a dry stonewall & trees. Pass buildings on the right & a signpost ‘Arncliffe 2 ¾ miles’. Follow path over a stile & continue past lots of boulders through a broken wall & over another stile in a wall. When you come to a faint divide in the paths descend down towards valley. Arncliffe will come into view with a steep hill the other side. Over another stile, descend to Arncliffe - PLEASE TAKE GREAT CARE HERE! Go over another 3 stiles & before a ruined stonewall in front of you take a steep path through wall on the left. Go through a gap in another wall. Enter a green lane & go left into Arncliffe.
Checkpoint 5 IN is on Arncliffe Green.
The OUT checkpoint, where you can get a drink & visit the toilet is at Amerdale Hall.
To get there follow road towards Kilnsey, turn left at the junction - Amerdale Hall is down the lane on the left. Please take care on the road outside the Hall, as it’s on a bend. PLEASE NOTE: NO WALKING BOOTS IN THE MAIN HALL. Remember you MUST CHECK OUT here too.


FINAL ROUTE FOR ALL WALKERS
- ARNCLIFFE TO KILNSEY

From Amerdale Hall turn left, towards the church. Before the entrance to the churchyard, there is a drive to the right, which has a signpost to Hawkswick. Walk down the drive, when you get into the courtyard bear left to a gate which leads into a field. Once in the field follow the yellow markers on the wooden uprights, along the river. Continue on this path crossing stiles & passing through meadows, ensuring the river is on your left. When you reach a stile at a footbridge, go over the footbridge & right down a minor road passing the hamlet of Hawkswick. Keep on walking along this minor road for some time until you reach the car park where you started!
