Answers to the Snap Quiz

  1. Saturday
  2. No, it is just before New Moon (even apart from any cloud cover).
  3. The answer depends on your torch, of course. The next edition may have an article about battery lifetimes.
  4. False. The Y2K bugs are in many programs, only a few of them by Microsoft. There are millenium bugs in programs with no Microsoft component at all.
  5. False, alas. There are plenty of simple techniques like that, many of which work. The problem is that they need to be encoded into the relevant computer programs and this hasn't always been done.
  6. False. There are problems with such things as the last two year digits being zero, even though it isn't the first year of a century. There may be more problems at the start of 2001, so we may have to go through all this again …

  8. Yes. The rule is that it is a leap year if:
    it is divisible by 4
except that if it is divisible by 100 it is not,
except that if it is divisible by 400 it is.

So you might get lucky - she might propose to you on February 29th :-)
